In the world of high fashion, it doesn’t get better than being handmade. And while craftsmen toil away at their work desks, piecing together items that will eventually be sold for several lakhs of rupees, it’s rare to ever get a chance to see them at work.
Which is why an iconic fashion label is bringing down a team of artisans from Florence to give loyal customers an insight into the process behind creating their signature pieces.
To celebrate the 90th anniversary of their house, Gucci is inviting guests to take a tour of the recreated miniature factory at its store in Mumbai, complete with custom-built workshops, sewing machines, tools and mood boards detailing a bag’s genesis. Guests will be able to view the bags being made from start to finish, and if their wallets are willing, they can even buy the custom-designed piece hot off table. The entire process will then be replicated in New Delhi on December 10.
Gucci Bag“The products can be personalised with hand-embossed monogramming once completed. The handbags will also feature a special plaque inside, bearing the location and date of creation,” says a spokesperson for Gucci. Those who do come equipped with their chequebooks will also receive a personal letter from the creative director of the brand, Frida Giannini.
“I have seen a similar concept with other brands, and it’s really exciting that they’re doing it in Mumbai,” says jewellery designer Queenie Singh. Adds socialite Roohi Jaikishen, another fan, “It’s a name that I’ve been exposed to since I was a child, as my mother used to wear their products. It’s great to see culture and heritage combine to create something wearable. I’m excited to see the collection, before I plan to buy a bag.”
The pieces being created include the New Bamboo, the New Jackie, named for the late Jackie Onassis, former First Lady of the US, the 1973 and the Stirrup.
The Gucci Artisans Corner will be held at the Trident Hotel, Nariman Point on December 3. Guests can buy bags once they’re completed.
