PAPUA NEW GUINEA: A major 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said, but no immediate tsunami warning was issued.

The quake struck at a depth of 115 kilometres (71 miles) southwest of the coastal city of Lae and 223 kilomtres from the capital Port Moresby.

People came running out of buildings, power lines swayed and parked cars rocked.
